Samantha Holmes

Samantha Holmes works closely with various small independent producer groups in poor communities, mainly in the rural areas surrounding Puno in the south of Peru where unemployment is very high. The groups are principally family businesses and individual home workers who previously, despite the fine quality of their workmanship, had never made Alpaca clothing for the European markets. She visits them each year and ensures that they are fairly remunerated and work in good conditions. Each worker normally knits for no more than four to five hours a day.

reflections from a continent

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness.”-Mark Twain. “Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry but by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.”-Maya Angelou.
