Details
The scarf is a versatile accessory adding colour, pattern and drama. This uniquely beautiful and generously sized silk scarf has been made by a cooperative of women artisans in West Bengal, India. Carefully made by piecing together lengths from two complimentary patterned recycled saris, the layers are then stitched together in the traditional style of kantha, where female artisans cover the fabric with rows of tiny running stitches using a variety of cotton thread. This stitching enables the recycling of saris and also provides strength and a rippling texture to the scarf. Each artisan will take about two weeks to complete the kantha stitching on every scarf and will embroider her name in Bengali on the corner of the scarf she has stitched, just as an artist would sign their work. Each scarf is totally unique and any slight imperfections are an indication of the upcycled nature of this handmade accessory.
