What happens in the forest after darkness falls? The Night Life of Trees is an exquisite hand-bound, screen-printed book of art and folklore on trees by three of the finest artists of the Gond tribe, traditionally a community of forest dwellers from central India. Living in a densely forested region the tree is at the heart of their art which is traditionally painted on the mud floors and walls of their homes. They believe that trees are hard at work during the day providing shelter and nourishment and it is only at night that trees can rest and their spirits are revealed. Each painting is accompanied by a poetic tale or myth narrated by the artists themselves, further proof of their wonder and regard for the natural world. This beautifully illustrated book was Winner of the BolognaRagazzi Award, New Horizons, 2008. Art critic John Berger says "A book where the nightingale sings until morning".
